This list contains several of my favourite links. The pages listed here contain useful, interesting or just nice to know information about the french horn in particular or about music in general.
www.hoornistengenootschap.nl | The Dutch Horn Society is the association for Dutch (or Flemish) hornplayers! I am an active member for many years already, and I think that everybody who plays the horn should join the club. The Dutch Horn Society web site contains many more interesting horn links. |
www.hornsociety.org | The web site of the The International Horn Society. |
www.british-horn.org www.hornklub.dk www.svenskahorn.se www.hornklubben.no www.hornclub.fi afcor.free.fr www.corno.it www.wienerwaldhornverein.at www.sahornsoc.org www.hoorn.be |
Many countries have their own horn society! |
Horn Articles Online | The Horn Articles Online by Dr. John Ericson contain valuable information about the history of the french horn. Hornplayer John Ericson is Assistant Professor of Horn at the School of Music of Arizona State University. |
www.hornmidi.com | This is a fantastic site for hornplayers who like to study with an accompanist, but don't have a piano player available. Here you can find the piano accompaniment of many horn concertos and solo pieces, in MIDI format. With just one mouse click you can start, stop or restart your "piano player in a box". |
Orchestral Horn Excerpts | A collection of horn excerpts presented as they appear in the original parts and performed in context by various orchestras, compiled and created by Daren Robbins. |
www.mutopiaproject.org | An online library of sheet music which is freely available to everybody. The collection is extended every day, also wiht horn music! |
Digital Mozart Edition | Sheet music of all(!) works by Mozart available online. |
Gebr. Alexander | My favourite horns ... |
Paxman Engelbert Schmid Hans Hoyer Finke ED.Kruspe Holton Ricco Kühn Dieter Otto Cornford Klaus Fehr Yamaha Conn Jiracek Lidl |
and several other horn manufacturers. |
www.wagner-tuba.com | This web site is dedicated to the fascinating history of a horn disguised as a tuba. |
Horn Quiz | On the web site of natural horn specialist Andrew Clark I found a "horn quiz" for advanced players! I think I do not know the answer to more than half of the questions... (although I know a lot about horns, or don't I?). |
Kill The Horns | Maybe a nice game for those who don't like horns? |
Horatio Hornblower | Although the name of my french horn page resembles the name of this hero from books and movies he was not the source of my inspiration. I think that the title of a nice solo piece for the french horn section of a wind band (we played this very long ago with the orchestra of my music school) has been lingering in my subconscious: "Hornblowers Holiday". |
H.E.A.R. Risk Trivia | On this page of the H.E.A.R. organisation (Hearing Education and Awareness for Rockers, and for other musicians of course) you can find out how much noise (dB) you can cause on your horn, and how much noise your fellow orchestra musicians can create. |

A list of Dutch (symphonic) orchestras. I regularly check these sites for concerts that can be mentioned on the event calendar of the Dutch Horn Society. Of course this list is not complete, so if you know a useful extension to this list please let me know. |
www.fagotclub.nl | The Dutch association of bassoon players, one of the sister associations of the Dutch Horn Society. The "FC Holland" is a special club to me, because my brother plays the bassoon and it is one of my favourite musical instruments. |
Jesse Read | Canadian bassoonist Jesse Read recorded the "complete" repertoire for two horns and bassoon! You can read more about that music in this article from Uijlenspieghel (in Dutch). |
www.nfg-fluit.nl www.nerv.nl |
Two more Dutch associations of woodwind players. Besides the Dutch Horn Society I have not found another Dutch club of brass players! Also Dutch oboe players don't seem to be united online. |
www.instrumentenweb.com | A Dutch web site with a lot of information, pictures and sound samples of many musical instruments, modern as well as authentic. It might be a bit less interesting if you don't read Dutch :( |
horn.pagina.nl muziek.pagina.nl harmonie.pagina.nl |
Special interest sections of www.startpagina.nl. Overviews of many different pages about (horn) music ... in Dutch. |
www.hornhistory.com | This website presents an overview of important events in the history of the horn, between 1633 and 1960, and also contains an overview of famous hornplayers, between 1680 and 1940. Of course it is almost impossible to make this kind of overviews complete, but here you can find quite some information. |
Hornisten in Leipzig | A very interesting historical overview of hornplayers who have played in the famous Gewandhaus in Leipzig. |
Internationale Gustav Mahler Gesellschaft The Mahler Archives |
Gustav Mahler is one of my favourite composers. The first time I heard Mahler's music, when I was sixteen or seventeen years old, I was very much impressed. And I still am! |
Richard Wagner Archive | This site provides much information about Richard Wagner and his music. Although Wagner did not write any specific "horn music", all of his music contains fantastic parts for the horns. |
Siegfried Hornruf | The web site of the famous hornplayer Hans Pizka contains an overview, including sound recordings, of various performances of Richard Wagner's best known piece for horn. Here you can also find much background information about the Hornruf. |
Siegfried Horn Call | In this YouTube movie the Swedish horn player Annamia Larsson demonstrates how beautifully she can play the Hornruf! |
www.limburgzingt.nl | If you are really interested: more than ten thousand (carnival) songs from the province of Limburg! |
