My horns

This is my horn, an Alexander 103, un-lacquered yellow brass with a detachable bell. I bought this horn in 1987 and it's now almost thirty years old. During the years many repairs have been done to this horn, but it still looks nice and sounds great.

Next to my Alexander I own a Yamaha YHR662 double horn, which is also more than thirty years old. I use this horn only to play in the streets of Maastricht during the Carnival, or sometimes when my Alexander is under repair.

I play on a mouthpiece by Bruno Tilz, model B6. That is quite a large and deep mouthpiece and because I often play low horn I like it very much. Years ago a friend, who plays tuba (!), and I have drilled a hole in this mouthpiece to make the bore even wider: it is now 4.5 mm instead of 4.2. The result is a nice "bass horn" mouthpiece, but fortunately enough I can still play higher notes on it as well. In the rare cases when I prefer a more clear sound I use a Tilz D6 mouthpiece, which is just a bit less deep and has a normal bore.
